Custom Deck Installation in Austin, TX

Cedar, composite, and hardwood decks designed to handle South Austin weather and provide a welcoming outdoor living space.

A deck is never just a deck

A deck is where summer actually happens. Dinner outside. Neighbors leaning over the rail. Kids running barefoot until somebody calls them in. We build decks the same way we build fences cedar that earns its color, posts set in concrete, boards gapped and fastened to spec. Every decision made for the long run, not the fast finish. Pickets doesn’t do the fast version. We do the one-time version.

Good decks start with
a real conversation

Fill in the details below and we’ll put together a rough estimate for your project — then follow up to walk the yard, talk through materials, and give you a number we can actually stand behind. Most decks start at a conversation. Yours can too.

We respond within one business day. A real person — not an automated response.

    Cedar, composite, and
    right call

Every yard is different. We’ll tell you what the job actually needs — not what’s cheapest to install.

    Cedar

    The original, for a reason.

Cedar is lighter than most hardwoods, naturally rot-resistant, and gets better with age. The tannins darken it into something that looks earned. We source thick boards — not construction-grade — and finish every surface before it goes down.

    Composite Decking

Built for people who don't want to think about it.

We work with Trex and TimberTech boards — not the cheap alternatives. Composite won’t splinter, won’t need annual sealing, and handles Austin summers without warping or checking. It holds up quietly, season after season.

    Hardwood & Ipe

For the yard that means business.

Ipe is denser than most domestic hardwoods. It doesn’t rot. It doesn’t dent easily. After fifteen years in an Austin backyard, it still looks like it was put there on purpose. It’s the floor for a project where the budget is not the first question asked.

    Built one time.
    Done right.

No shortcuts. No “we’ll come back and fix that.” Every step in the right order, by the people who know why it matters.

    01

    The Site Visit

We walk your yard. We look at grade, drainage, sun direction, and how you actually use the space — not just where the footings go. You get a real quote from a real person, not a form.

    02

    Material Selection

We bring samples and talk you through the trade-offs — not to upsell, but because the wrong material is the wrong answer.

Cedar for character. Composite for zero maintenance. Ipe when it has to outlast you.

    03

    The Build

Concrete footings. Steel post bases where the application calls for it. Boards gapped and fastened to spec. We communicate throughout the build.

    04

    The Walkthrough

We walk the finished deck with you before we call it done. Every board, every rail, every edge. If something isn’t right, we fix it before we leave — not after a phone call.

    EVERYTHING YOU NEED
    TO KNOW

Common questions about the deck installation process.

Austin’s combination of high UV exposure and humidity can be brutal on wood. We recommend:

    • Composite Decking (Trex/TimberTech): The top choice for longevity. It won’t warp, splinter, or rot, and it stays much cooler than older synthetics.
    • Ipe or Hardwoods: These are incredibly dense and naturally resistant to insects and decay, making them perfect for the Texas climate if you want a natural look.
    • Western Red Cedar: A classic choice that handles moisture well, though it requires regular staining to maintain its color against the Texas sun.

The physical build usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, but the “start to finish” timeline includes planning:

    • Design & Quoting: 1 week.
    • Permitting/HOA: 2 to 4 weeks (depending on your local municipality).
    • Construction: Once the materials are on-site, a standard deck takes about 5–10 business days to complete, depending on size and features like pergolas or lighting.

Absolutely. We aim to make the process stress-free.

    • Permits: We handle the application and submittal process with the city to ensure your deck meets all local safety codes.
    • HOA: We provide you with the professional drawings, material samples, and site plans you need to get a “yes” from your Homeowners Association board.

Maintenance depends entirely on your material choice:

    • Composite: Virtually maintenance-free. Just a seasonal wash with soap and water to remove Texas dust and pollen.
    • Natural Wood: Requires a deep clean and a fresh coat of UV-rated stain every 18 to 24 months to prevent the sun from turning the wood gray and to keep the fibers from cracking.

When you choose Pickets, you aren’t just getting a deck; you’re investing back into Austin and its surrounding neighborhoods.

    • Local Employment: we hire local craftsmen and pay living wages, keeping talent within our community.
    • Local Sourcing: We prioritize purchasing our lumber and supplies from local vendors, strengthening the regional economy.
    • Reliability: As a local business, our reputation is our lifeblood. We live where we work, which means we are committed to building structures that make our neighborhoods more beautiful and durable.
